Mindswayer is an automated, easily transportable tool that makes P.E. more accessible to students with cognitive or physical disabilities. It was designed by Ashley Coria Ramirez, Brianny Nava, and Odalys Garcia for their community partner, the Jefferson County Adapted Physical Education program, which aims to enable students with limitations to participate fully in PE courses by modifying curricula and providing disability equipment. The team created Mindswayer after learning about the challenges surrounding these bulky tools and the need for a more transportable alternative. Using tilt sensors and DC motors, Mindswayer helps students swing a baseball bat or golf club by pushing a button, hitting a lever, or activating a voice command. By responding to multiple types of input, the device acknowledges countless disabilities while also solving the transportation problems expressed by the team’s community partner.
